The audio rights were acquired for a sum of ₹60 million (US$800,000). The soundtrack album composition was completed by early March 2013. Six songs were recorded by 23 November 2012.
Whilst doing reconnaissance for the film, Rai recorded the live aarti chants for the score, however, the patch recordings were fit into a complete song titled "The Land of Shiva". The composer stated that he had used the sounds of shehnai in almost every song, thereby paying a tribute to Ustad Bismillah Khan.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Rahman stated that he had emphasized the folk-classical genre as the film brings out a fascination for Benaras through the music and most of the songs are character-driven. Rai attributed the melody and beauty of the particular song to "Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai" from the 1973 film Bobby. The composition of the song "Banarasiya" was ready by September 2012 but was not recorded with a singer as Rai felt that no vocals matched with Sonam Kapoor's voice. He agreed to compose after the script was re-written entirely in English by Rai and the former kept the script personally. Rahman was signed on to compose songs and the background score. And last but not the least, I want to say, "Well done Dhanush, Welcome to Hindi Film Industry!".In June 2012, A. I'll just say, please go and watch the movie in a theatre. I wont give away anything about the story in my review. I was sceptical about this movie but was I surprised! I am glad I went and watched this movie in a theatre. Abhay Deol has a guest appearance which he has performed well as expected. If she wants to be taken seriously as an actor, she must do roles with meat like the one in this movie. Sonam Kapoor is another surprise package of this movie. Not once did I feel bored watching him act flawlessly. Reason? His immense talent and experience. And what has he done? He has very easily managed to carry the entire film on his two shoulders.
An ordinary looking actor from the Tamil Film Industry. What is different about this movie? Dhanush. Reviewed by jhingalalahmm 10 / 10 / 10 Well done Dhanush! My Verdict: Expect a love story with a traditional characterization supported by some brilliant music and clean performances by the lead cast - you won't be disappointed. It would only be fair if i end where I started - Dhanush simply stole the show with his intense portrayal of a person driven by love, a person who does the most stupid, brave and incomprehensible of things in the name of love.
Abhay was as flawless as ever, just easing through his role with nonchalant ease. Sonam for once does justice to her role, she grew into her role as the movie progressed and gave a telling performance that she could reflect back with pride.
The three main characters, all have their own shades of grey and more often than not they stem from Love. To top it all, when you have ARR weaving his magic with some sublime music, the beauty of Banaras just comes alive in front of your eyes. The movie, doesn't disappoint those who enjoyed the stories where love stands above everything else in life.
